UPDATE FROM CHRISTIAN, SKIPPER OF COMMON LOONS
19:45, Monday 30 Jun 25
Day 2 is in the books, and we’re working on closing out day 3!
We lost the wind as we headed south from the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. It never came back. We rowed and pedaled our way to Olympia shoal. With Corey on the oars, Michael on the pedal drive, and Brady tending and trimming the drifter sail we were able to sneak along between eddies and make our way through Dana Passage against an ebbing current.

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to catch the same current out. By the time we got back to Dana passage we had a fierce flooding current to buck. We tried three times to make it through. Once under sail, once under human power and a third time under human and sail power. But we couldn’t pull it off. We dropped anchor in about 7 feet of water and waited until the current slackened. While anchored, Team Bowl of Sloop rafted up with us after trying valiantly but ultimately in vain to buck the current.
At 2100 (9pm) we lifted anchor and rowed into the sunset. It was an all night row as we decided against using the pedal drive. Brady and Michael and I took turns rowing all night to get us near the entrance to the Tacoma Narrows. We anchored around 5:30 and sat down to wait on the current to change in our favor.
